The complete map of France's VCs for 2026: 20 funds ranked by stage (pre-seed / seed / Series A), sector and ticket size, with how to reach each one.
swanbase banner Top VC France 2026: 20 funds ranked by stage and sector

Paris, a Wednesday morning. A founder types "France VC list" and lands on three articles: a top 10, a top 30, a top 50. None of them tells them which one fits their startup. France has roughly 1,100 early-stage investors, of which ~150 are active VC funds and 20 concentrate most of the deal flow12. This guide ranks them by stage (pre-seed, seed, Series A), by sector (B2B SaaS, deeptech, climate, AI, fintech, healthtech) and by ticket size, with the access path that works in 2026 for each fund. A matrix that answers the only useful question: "which one do I contact tomorrow morning". Paris remains the center of gravity, but six regions have active funds (Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Nantes, Lille). The best VC isn't the most famous. It's the one that matches your stage, your sector, your ticket.

How to choose a VC: the stage × sector × ticket matrix

The classic trap: sending the same deck to 80 funds. In practice, 60 don't invest at your stage, 15 don't invest in your sector, and the remaining 5 reply in three months because you targeted no one. Good mapping cuts your fundraising cycle by five.

Stage: pre-seed, seed, Series A, Series B+

Stage determines the ticket and the nature of the conviction. Pre-seed (prototype or €0-500K ARR): €50-500K ticket, funds that back the team and the vision. Seed (€500K-2M ARR): €500K-3M ticket, funds that want qualified traction. Series A (€2-10M ARR, growth >100% YoY): €3-15M ticket, 15-25% ownership taken3. Series B and beyond: €10-100M+ ticket, the fund becomes an international scaling partner.

Sector: B2B SaaS, marketplace, deeptech, climate, AI, fintech, healthtech

Most French VCs call themselves "tech generalists" but have their comfort zones. XAnge leans into data/trust/impact. Sofinnova is healthcare only. Asterion is climate only. Reading a fund's latest deal tells you more than reading its "thesis" page.

Ticket size: lead vs follow-on

A fund that "leads" writes the biggest check, sets the valuation and structures the term sheet. A "follow-on" tops it up. Kima always follows, never leads. Side Capital only leads (€300-600K). Knowing a fund's position saves you six weeks pitching someone who will never sign first.

Geography: Paris-only, all of France, Europe, global

Kima invests everywhere. Daphni covers Europe (London, Berlin, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Helsinki). Newfund is French-American (Paris + Silicon Valley)4. Partech has offices across four continents. Regional funds limit their tickets to local startups. An international fund opens its international network; a regional one opens local institutional players.

Sofinnova Partners

Paris VCs vs the rest of France

French venture capital is ultra-centralized. The periphery has its own quirks.

Paris: nearly all the significant deals

Kima, Daphni, Side, Founders Future, Partech, Serena, Elaia, Breega, Sofinnova, XAnge, Eurazeo: all based in Paris. A historical concentration tied to Station F, the HEC/Polytechnique/X ecosystem and the region's family offices. Fund-by-fund detail in our dedicated Paris VC guide.

Regional funds: Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, Lille, Toulouse, Nantes

Cap Innov'Est (Alsace), Sofimac Innovation (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), Cita Création (Pays de la Loire), Aquiti Gestion (Nouvelle-Aquitaine), Nord France Amorçage (Hauts-de-France). Tickets of €100K to €1M, conditional on a regional presence or local institutional backing. Best combined with a Paris-based lead VC rather than used as a substitute.

When to target a regional fund over a Paris one

Three cases: (1) a startup already based outside Paris looking for a nearby investor, (2) a project with strong local roots (industry, agriculture, location-specific biotech), (3) a need below €1M with a single investor. Otherwise, a Paris VC remains the right instinct for a seed above €1M.

How to approach each VC

The perfect deck with no warm intro converts around 1-2% into a first meeting. The same deck through a warm intro converts 5-10x better. Here are the paths that work in France in 2026.

Warm intro paths

The best intros come from founders the fund has already backed. Find the portfolio on Crunchbase or the fund's website, target 2-3 founders close to your sector, and write a 4-line message: who you are, what you do, traction in numbers, and an explicit ask (an intro to X at fund Y, not a generic coffee). Second source: partner accelerators (Station F, swanbase, Y Combinator France) with direct links to the funds. For the pitch that gets through the filter, follow the dedicated guide.

Cold emails that work in France

An ultra-specific subject line ("Seed €1.5M, B2B SaaS, 30K MRR, 25% MoM growth"), 5 lines max, a clickable deck link, and an explicit ask for 20 minutes. Don't attach the deck: a DocSend link lets you track opens. Avoid the funds at the top of the chain (Kima receives ~500 deals a week). Favor analysts and associates: they read more decks than partners and need to surface dealflow.

Flagship events and programs to target

France Digitale Day (September, Paris), Vivatech (June, Paris), Web Summit Lisbon (November). On the program side: Bpifrance Accélérateur (rigorous selection, direct access to funds), swanbase (long-term support in Paris and remote, direct access to partner VCs, 2% equity), Founders Founders (the Founders Future program). A serious accelerator multiplies your VC response rate by 3 to 5.

The top 20 France VCs of 2026 at a glance

Which VCs are actually investing in 2026 (vs on pause)

The 2024-2026 market has separated the funds that are deploying from those that are holding back.

Reading the post-2024 landscape

The pace of the French market slowed in 2025: 494 rounds recorded, €7.4bn raised (-5%) across 618 deals (-15%)519. Average tickets rose (a selectivity effect), but the number of deals fell. Funds closing new vehicles in 2025-2026 are actively deploying. Those whose last close dates back to 2021-2022 have little ammunition left.

Recently raised funds (= actively deploying)

Daphni Blue €260M (closed January 2026), Partech Impact €300M (closing 2026), Elaia DV5 (first close €120M February 2026, targeting €300M), Ovni Ventures I €50M (closed May 2025), Breega Europe Seed III €150M (2023, in full deployment). These vehicles are investing actively. Target them first when you launch a raise in 2026.

VC vs the alternatives: angels, family offices, equity crowdfunding

VC isn't always the right vehicle.

When a VC is the wrong vehicle

(1) You're raising less than €500K: too small for an institutional VC, so go through business angels or equity crowdfunding. (2) Your ambition is a cash-flow business at €5-10M ARR, not a €500M exit: a VC will push you toward growth that breaks profitability. (3) Your market is niche and defensible: a patient family office beats a VC demanding 10x in 5 years. For the full comparison, read VC vs business angels in France and how a VC fund works.

FAQ

How many VCs should you contact to raise a seed in France?

A useful range: 25 to 50 well-targeted funds (stage × sector × ticket), not 200 blasted out at once. Out of 30 qualified funds, expect 8-12 first meetings, 3-5 second meetings, 1-2 term sheets if the case is strong. Better 30 funds that reply than 200 that toss your deck without reading it.

Do you need a lawyer before you pitch?

No need to pitch: a deck commits you to nothing. From the term sheet onward, yes. A fundraising lawyer (Aramis, Bird & Bird, Gide, or boutiques like SLVF) costs €10-30K for a seed, €30-80K for a Series A. Skimping on the lawyer at your first raise creates clauses that haunt later rounds (badly drafted drag-along, aggressive anti-dilution, too many board seats).

How long does it take to raise a seed VC round in France in 2026?

Count on 4 to 9 months between first contact and closing, with a median of ~6 months in 2026 (a market that has slowed since 2022). A typical breakdown: 4-6 weeks of first meetings, 4-6 of due diligence, 4-8 of term sheet and negotiation, 4-8 of legal closing. The tougher the market, the longer due diligence runs.

Can a French VC invest in a non-French startup?

Yes, and many do. Newfund has invested in the US since 2008. Partech is present across 4 continents. Daphni covers London, Berlin, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Helsinki. Kima Ventures invests globally, with a focus on French founders wherever they are. The constraints are mainly legal (holding structure, taxation) rather than thesis-related.
