A SATT is a technology transfer acceleration company. Its job: spot public research results with commercial potential, fund their maturation to a demonstrable stage, protect the intellectual property, then licence it to a company, often one created for the purpose.
In the Grenoble region, that role belongs to Linksium, which has helped create 87 deeptech startups and holds a state commitment of 57 million euros over ten years. Average investment per maturation project sits at around 180,000 euros, earmarked for building a lab demonstrator.
Why this matters more here than elsewhere: the sheer density of labs and research institutes in the region means many high-potential projects are born in an academic setting. Ignoring this track when you qualify for it means self-funding work that someone else would have paid for.
Think about what that money represents. Maturation funding of roughly 180,000 euros covers the phase nobody else wants to pay for: the technology works in the lab, but nothing proves it will hold up outside ideal conditions. Private investors won't come in because the technical risk hasn't been retired; customers won't order because there's nothing to evaluate. Time. A maturation phase runs for months, sometimes years. You're not putting a product on the market next year.
A share of the value. The intellectual property belongs to the institution, and using it means a licence with a financial return attached. Terms are negotiated project by project and aren't published.
A wider governance table. Institutions, the transfer body and any industrial partners all get a say. A deeptech startup rarely begins life with a simple cap table.
In exchange, you get non-dilutive funding for the riskiest phase, equipment and technical expertise you couldn't reach otherwise, and protection for the technology.
The thing to settle early, in writing, is the exact scope of the licence. Three questions before you commit: is the licence exclusive and for which territories, what happens if the company pivots to an application it doesn't cover, and what are the exit terms if the project stops. Those answers set your room to manoeuvre for years, and they're far easier to negotiate before incorporation than after your first round.

Linksium
This is the pivot of the whole track: it funds maturation and incubates deeptech projects, with support covering the technology, the market and team building.
The typical entry profile: a project out of a regional lab, with an identified technology, a need for a demonstrator, and often a researcher who won't be the one running the company.
That last point matters. A meaningful share of deeptech projects are looking for an entrepreneurial profile to complete the scientific team. If you're a founder with no technology of your own but with startup experience behind you, this track is also a way in, through recruitment rather than an application.
Incubation at Grenoble INP
The institution runs its own incubation programme, with formalised entry requirements and a clear focus on projects with a technological and scientific component.
As with every academic programme, the first filter is your link to the institution, researchers and students included.
Entry requirements and the funding you can tap
Three things come up again and again in deeptech track applications. Technology readiness level, high enough for maturation to make sense and low enough that private investors won't fund it alone. Intellectual property status, which needs clearing up before anything else, especially when several institutions are involved. And team composition, where the presence of an entrepreneurial profile is explicitly assessed.
On top of that sit the national innovation grants, which you can pursue in parallel and whose deadlines the support structures know better than you do.

The generalist incubators and accelerators
Tarmac, inovallée
Tarmac is the incubator of the inovallée technology park, and its model stands out on one practical point: there are no fixed cohorts. Support is tailored to each company and you can join at any point in the year, so there's no waiting six months for an application window to open.
The full incubation path runs for three years. Inside it, there are structured programmes: Take-Off, twelve months long, focused on securing the launch phase; the GATE programmes target growth acceleration. In 2025, 28 startups were incubated there.
For a technical founder with no academic affiliation, it's the clearest option on Grenoble's generalist track.
The absence of fixed cohorts is more than an organisational detail. The cohort format imposes a collective rhythm, which works well when projects resemble each other and costs you when they don't: an industrial startup that needs to produce a first batch has no business on the same calendar as a software startup hunting for its first ten users.
The trade-off is that continuous, individual support means you miss out on the cohort effect. If peer group is what you're coming for, ask about shared sessions before you commit.

AlterIncub and social entrepreneurship
Alter'Incub Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes is the incubator dedicated to the social and solidarity economy, with an office in Grenoble. Two formats: Entreprendre Demain, six weeks to get from idea to concept, and Bâtir Demain, six months renewable up to twenty-four, to get from concept to launch.
The short format is rare and genuinely useful: six weeks to decide whether a concept holds up is exactly what a lot of founders stuck at the earliest stage are missing.

The school incubators
IncubaGEM, Grenoble École de Management
IncubaGEM supports founders who are students, graduates or staff of the school, and it also accepts outside applicants, which makes it less closed off than most school incubators.
The terms are public. Incubation runs six to eighteen months, renewable twice. It includes eight hours of monthly support split between one-to-one coaching, workshops and introductions, access to a network of experts and mentors, and the option to register your startup's address on the Grenoble or Paris campus. It's free, and the programme takes no equity.
Selection happens across two intake sessions a year, with a panel interview and a requirement for a complete business model. That last point is a hard filter: turning up with an idea and enthusiasm won't get you through.

What changes in 2026
The end of French Tech Tremplin and what replaces it
One piece of news invalidates part of what you'll find online.
French Tech Tremplin, launched in 2019 to support equal opportunity in entrepreneurship, is being wound down. The fifth cohort, whose winners were announced in June 2026, is the last one, and the programme closes for good in June 2027. It's replaced by French Tech Nova, which focuses on scaling startups that are already off the ground rather than on getting them started.
For a Grenoble founder: if your plan rested on applying to Tremplin at the seed stage, that plan is gone, and its replacement targets a different stage. Local pages still presenting Tremplin as active are out of date, including some that rank well.
