Nametlas home page

Nametlas checks whether your brand name is free in France's SIRENE company register, seven trademark offices, fourteen domain extensions and twelve social networks and platforms. It turns the results into a score from 0 to 100. swanbase built the tool for founders who need a name before they incorporate, file a trademark or buy a domain.

How it works

You type a name on the home page. An optional filter targets your Nice classes. These 45 categories of goods and services define the scope of a trademark: class 9 covers software, class 42 covers software as a service. According to the site, results come back in under 20 seconds. Each check produces a result page at nametlas.com/check/ followed by the name.

Nametlas queries these sources:

  • Company register: SIRENE (INSEE), with a link to the French government business directory.
  • Trademark offices: INPI (France), EUIPO (European Union), USPTO (United States), UK IPO (United Kingdom), CIPO (Canada), IP Australia and JPO (Japan, including marks filed under the Madrid Protocol). For the JPO, the page notes that coverage spans the last 12 months.
  • Similar names: Nametlas generates phonetic and visual variants of the name in five European languages (FR, EN, DE, IT, ES), then searches for them in every trademark database. Each close mark shows a similarity percentage and its registration number.
  • Domains: .com, .fr, .io, .org, .net, .app, .dev, .co, .ai, .tech, .store, .xyz, .me and .eu. The .com and .fr lookups use RDAP (Verisign and AFNIC). The other extensions go through DNS and are indicative.
  • Social networks and usernames: LinkedIn and GitHub for handles, then Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube, Threads, Pinterest, Reddit, Snapchat, Substack and Twitch for usernames.
  • Google: the top ten results on Google France and the knowledge panel.

Nametlas result page showing the overall score, the free sources and the paid sources

The score adds up points per source. SIRENE weighs 20 points, INPI 10, domains 25 and social networks 15. The remaining 30 points are split across the other trademark offices and the similarity analysis, depending on which checks ran. From 80 up, Nametlas displays "This name appears available". Between 40 and 79, it displays "This name carries some risks". Below 40, Nametlas displays "This name is already taken".

Two tabs complete the result. "Score breakdown" lists the points earned per source and the biggest losses. "Recommendations" gives one action per source, such as registering the free extensions or checking that a similar mark operates in a different sector.

The site also offers a name comparison tool that ranks two to five candidates side by side, plus an AI name generator. You describe your business and tone, then pick a style (invented, compound, real word, abstract or descriptive). The generator lists 5 to 20 suggestions for you to check next.

MCP access for AI agents

Nametlas exposes an MCP server at https://nametlas.com/mcp, with OAuth sign-in. From Claude Code or any other MCP client, you can run the whole sequence without opening the site:

  • suggest_names proposes names from a brief, without checking them;
  • suggest_classes maps a plain-language description of your business onto Nice classes;
  • check_name_essentials screens a whole list of names in one call;
  • trademark_risk returns a verdict per country and per class: blocked, contested, clear or unchecked;
  • explain_score shows the points each source earned and lost;
  • check_domains tests extensions outside the standard list, such as .de or .co.uk.

The server separates live trademarks from expired ones and gives the owner, number, classes, filing date and expiry date for each.

The server documentation states that only a live mark is a blocker. Without full access, paid sources come back locked. In a test on "swanbase", check_name_essentials returned the status available and a score of 94 out of 100. The result showed no trademark in the seven offices and no company in SIRENE, with the .com taken and nine extensions free. To connect an MCP server, see our guide to MCP servers in Claude Code.

Use cases for an early-stage startup

  • Shortlisting names: run your candidates through the comparison tool or check_name_essentials and drop the ones with a company of the same name in SIRENE or a live trademark in your classes.
  • Preparing a trademark filing: note the close marks with their numbers and owners, then hand that list to the IP attorney who drafts your application.
  • Targeting a foreign market: the paid check adds the USPTO, UK IPO, CIPO, IP Australia and JPO, for example before a launch in the United States or the United Kingdom.
  • Securing accounts before an announcement: the list of free and taken usernames shows where to create your accounts before a public launch.
  • Handing the search to an agent: ask your AI agent to generate names and check them in batches through the MCP server, and keep the final decision for yourself.

Pricing and access

The basic check is free and requires no account. The free version covers SIRENE, INPI, EUIPO, domains and social networks.

The full check costs €1.25 per name, paid from a button on each locked source. It adds the five other trademark offices (USPTO, UK IPO, CIPO, IP Australia, JPO) and usernames across platforms. The same payment also opens the Google results, the similarity analysis and the PDF report download.

In the comparison tool, a bundled full check costs €2.30 for two names, €3.10 for three names and €3.50 for four or five names. A free account keeps a history of your searches. The site has no separate pricing page: these prices appear on the payment buttons.

Limits

  • Nametlas is a research aid, provided for information only. The site states that its result is not legal advice and that the absence of a result does not guarantee a name is available. Before you file, have an IP attorney run a full clearance search.
  • The company register covers France only, through SIRENE. National trademark offices in other European countries, such as the German office, are not on the list: Nametlas covers Europe through the EUIPO.
  • Social network results are indicative, because platforms sometimes block automated checks. For extensions checked through DNS, a registered but unconfigured domain can show up as free. Confirm a domain with a registrar before you announce it.
  • A source can fail from time to time. On one result page we viewed, INPI showed "Error, please try again later" and an unknown status.
  • Each check creates a public page at nametlas.com/check/ followed by the name, and the site's sitemap lists several hundred of them. The Trends page also shows the most searched names. Avoid entering the name of a project you still want to keep confidential.

Origin

swanbase developed Nametlas in 2026, with the help of AI, as one of the tools it opens to entrepreneurs. The site carries a "Backed by swanbase" badge, and every result page links to the swanbase application. swanbase also presents the tool on its Nametlas free tool page, written in French.
